This seminar aims to give an overview of the large body of literature on language, gender and, by extension, sexuality in order to reflect on the link between language and the production of gender and sexual identities. The first part of the class will outline the founding theories of language & gender studies such as feminist theories, the dominance/difference dichotomy, performativity and ideology. In the second part, we will look at gender applied to specific linguistics topics. The assessment will be a small research project.
