Dear all,
I am happy to welcome you to the seminar "Romanticism and Orientalism". As the title indicates, we will be looking at the Romantic period in Britain and Ireland with a specific focus on Orientalism. We will examine how the 'Orient' and the 'Oriental Other' were written and constructed by writers from both nations and how the writers' own context heavily influnced their writing of the 'Orient'. We will discuss where we are dealing with cultual exchange and where we are seeing signs of projection onto the 'Orient'. Throughout the class, we will have the opportunity to look at where the British and Irish writers deviate from their writing of the 'Orient' and where they overlap. The period we are closely examining is politically quite eventful, so we will also take into consideration what is happening at the time. Nonetheless, we will primarily conduct close readings of the assigned texts and draw on secondary sources to help us understand the context better.
As these texts are quite old, you can find them online and use them without fear of copyright violations. I will be providing them alongside further material for your aid. Please note that when we meet in-person you are free to access the texts on your laptop, iPad, or of course in print. However, I would kindly ask you to abstain from using your phone for this or other purposes in the seminar.
As you have probably all noted via PULS, the first three sessions in October will be held remotely. We will also not be meeting via zoom. You will simply prepare your course reading and you will be provided with a forum on this platform, where you can ask questions and leave your comments. I encourage you to use this platform.
You will find the seminar outline, assessment guideline and the course material here on Open Moodle.
Should you have any questions, kindly reach out to me directly either via the message option on Open Moodle or via kubraozermis@zedat.fu-berlin.de
I look forward to meeting all of you in person very soon,
Kübra Özermis
